WRITING AXARQUIA

It's late December and I am sitting at the bar at Casa Paco in Cómpeta, looking out at the rain-soaked paving of Plaza Almijara. A wet dog roams around the abandoned tables and chairs, an advert for disappointment. The cold wind sends a plastic bag break-dancing across the scene. The conditions are reminiscent of a holiday I once had in Abergavenny, until the waitress's warm greeting, in which I have graduated from chica to guapa, brings me back to all the ways in which Spain is very different to Wales. I am here to meet two new members of our community, Andrew and Fi, writers from London who are setting up creative writing classes here in the Axarquía. I've met their kind before, I think to myself before they arrive. Writers from London – I'd better get some wine lined up. Meeting them for the first time they are all smiles, warm and approachable. 'Sorry about the weather,' I say, as if it's my responsibility to make the sun shine.

CLAIMING AN INHERITANCE IN SPAIN

This article we explain the procedures to follow when handling an inheritance in Spain. However, it is important to note that this is only a summary of the salient points, and to ensure the correct procedure is followed the intervention of a specialized attorney is necessary. 1.First it is essential to obtain the death certificate from the country where the person died. In the case of foreigners who have died in their country of origin and have assets in Spain the Death Certificate would be obtained there and then should be translated into Spanish and an “Apostille” (an official stamp), should be acquired to make it valid for use in Spain. Without this document, which is the only official proof of death, the heirs will not be able to process the inheritance. 2.Secondly, after 15 working days from the death (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and holidays), The Certificate of Wills and, where necessary, The Contracts and Insurance Certificate must be acquired. The first is necessary to confirm whether or not a will has been signed by the deceased, and the second as proof of any insurance contracts that provide compensation for the death. In order to obtain these certificates it would be necessary to present the Death Certificate, fill out an official application form and provide proof of payment of the fee (currently 3.60 € for each certificate). These certificates are issued on the spot.

BODEGAS BENTOMIZ CHRISTMAS

Bodegas Bentomiz in Sayalonga is planning to celebrate Christmas in style with live music and sumptuous dining … and one or two glasses along the way … Every winery has its own personality and Bodegas Bentomiz, the business that Dutch owners Clara and André began as a hobby, is distinguished by a mixture of hedonism, elegance and the capacity to create a perfect environment for the enjoyment of gastronomy and culture. Their beautiful building is typical of their approach – it stands out as unusual; it is stylish and modern, but they chose to clad the outside in a slate that looks like the local bedrock, so that it blends in perfectly with its environment. The same could be said of Clara and André! In the last year, as the reputation of their wonderful wine-centred restaurant has grown (see their TripAdvisor reviews and you will see that the superlatives are deserved), they have begun to venture into events, from private birthday parties to full-blown concerts with the most wonderful, vibrant music played as the sun went down at concerts in July and September.
